Elizabeth Whitlow Smith : an oral history / interviewed by Dawn Letson, 1999.

Smith discusses her childhood, family, and her early fascination with flying which led her to join the Civilian Pilot Training Program during her university years. She also discusses how she became a WASP, her training in Houston, service at Love Field, and the difficult decision she made in leaving the WASP.

Native of Pine Bluff, Arkansas and graduate of the University of Tulsa, 1942. While there, she joined the Civilian Pilot Training Program and learned to fly. In December, 1942 she applied to the WASP program, was accepted and trained at Ellington Field in Houston, Texas, graduating in May, 1943 with class 43-W-2. Smith was assigned to Love Field in Dallas, Texas and had additional training in Palm Springs and Orlando. Resigned from the WASP in August, 1944 to marry. She has four children and cur...
